COPICAD, in collaboration with Equity Bank, is implementing an agroforestry project in Laikipia and Nyandarua County aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, improving livelihoods, and promoting climate resilience. This initiative integrates tree planting with sustainable farming practices to restore degraded lands, increase agricultural productivity, and boost community resilience to climate change.
Project Objectives
- Promote Agroforestry Adoption: Support farmers in integrating trees with crops and livestock farming to enhance soil fertility and water conservation.
- Restore Degraded Land: Rehabilitate deforested and overgrazed areas through community-led tree planting initiatives.
- Enhance Livelihoods: Provide economic opportunities by promoting high-value tree species for timber, fruit, and fodder production.
- Strengthen Climate Resilience: Improve soil health and water retention to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture.
- Increase Community Engagement: Educate farmers on agroforestry benefits and best practices through training sessions and demonstration farms.
Key Activities
- Tree Planting Campaigns: Distribute and plant over 100,000 tree seedlings across farmlands, schools, and riparian areas.
- Farmer Training & Capacity Building: Conduct training sessions on sustainable agroforestry techniques, organic farming, and soil conservation.
- Microfinance Support: Equity Bank provides financial resources to farmers for agroforestry investment through affordable loans and grants.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Establish tracking systems to assess tree survival rates, soil improvement, and economic benefits for participating farmers.
Expected Outcomes
- Increased tree cover and improved environmental conservation in Nyandarua County.
- Improved food security and sustainable land use practices among local farmers.
- Enhanced household incomes through diversified agroforestry products.
- Strengthened partnerships between financial institutions and conservation organizations to drive sustainable development.
Through this partnership with Equity Bank, COPICAD is committed to creating a greener, more resilient Laikipia and Nyandarua County by integrating agroforestry into sustainable farming systems.
